News: Tuning at Shepperton Studios for ‘Anna Karenina’
Arriving at Shepperton Studios to tune the 1880’s Bechstein boudoir grand for the new Anna Karenina production, release date 7th September, I was escorted through the workaday concrete exterior into a fairytale setting: a vast ballroom, ballustraded sweeping mahogany staircases, plush carpeting, fabulous trompe l’oeil and all manner of tradesmen drilling, chopping, hacking, chiseling, and drinking tea. Not the easiest environment in which to tune such a venerable, fancy instrument, but needs must.
The piano was very careworn and had loose casework parts - mostly ornate fretwork etc - which needed gluing back into place, but otherwise it was totally standard internally. It had obviously been restrung a few times, however, and some of the tuning pins were a little looser than desirable, but I’m sure I made a good job of it. I’m looking forward more to seeing Keira than the Bechstein on the big screen, however!
Tuning
Drawing on years of experience, Tim Hendy will tune your piano to the correct intervals, while also responding to the subtleties of your piano's intonation. During tuning visits he is often able to assess potential problems and to effect repairs on site which might normally be considered workshop jobs.
Repairs, Reconditioning and Restoration
Major repairs, mechanical reconditioning and full restoration jobs on modern and antique pianos are performed at Tim Hendy's piano workshop in southwest London. Clients are welcome to visit the workshop to observe restoration and reconditioning work on their pianos. Clients are assured of:

Specialising in the replacement of Steinway action rails
The Steinway action rail is a design patented in the late 1800s, and employed in all of the company’s iconic grand pianos ever since. Unfortunately, these rails are prone to splitting and warping, as the hardwood core can swell in high humidity, causing the inflexible outer brass tube to crack. All Steinway grands are checked for this potential fault, and measures are suggested to rectify the problem when necessary.
